When it comes to loft conversions, getting the right roof window is a game changer. You want plenty of natural light, lower energy bills, and a comfortable, quiet space all year round. We recently faced this challenge and dove into the details to compare Velux’s popular MK08 range.

Today, we’re sharing our process and insights to help you (or your architect) make a well-informed decision.

What Matters Most?

The three models we reviewed all offer excellent quality—but every project is unique. In our research, we focused on three key factors:

  1. Noise Reduction (dB): Good acoustic performance means less external noise drifting into your newly converted space.

  2. Thermal Insulation (Uw): Superior insulation helps keep your loft warm in winter and cool in summer, thereby reducing energy costs.

  3. Maintenance Ratio: A window that’s low maintenance minimizes headaches over time while still looking great.

Comparing the Contenders

We looked closely at three Velux models from the MK08 range:

  • VELUX GPU MK08 0066

  • VELUX GPU MK08 0067

  • VELUX GPU MK08 0068

See the chart showing an overall comparison and summarizing their performance.

How We Made Our Decision

After reviewing the factors, we decided on the VELUX GPU MK08 0068 for our loft conversion project. Here’s why:

  • Excellent Insulation & Comfort: Although its thermal performance (around 1.1 W/m²K) is just a tad above the hybrid model, its Comfort Glazing delivers superb insulation—ideal for loft spaces.

  • Low Maintenance: With a low maintenance ratio, the 0068 is designed to keep your windows looking great with minimal upkeep.

  • Balanced Noise Reduction: Offering around 36–38 dB of sound reduction, it keeps the internal environment calm and comfortable.

In our project, the client and architect opted for three Velux roof windows sized at 78 x 140 cm. These were paired with a VELUX EKL S0313 triple flashing kit (suitable for slate roofs up to 8mm thick) to ensure optimal integration and waterproofing.

Final Takeaways

For anyone considering a loft conversion, here are a few friendly tips:

  • Balance Your Priorities: Think about what matters most in your space—whether it’s thermal efficiency, quiet comfort, or minimal upkeep.

  • Examine the Details: Look at the glazing type, noise and thermal performance, and how each product will integrate into your overall design. And don’t forget, size matters!

  • Consult with Experts: Use comparison charts and product reviews as tools to guide your decision—and don’t hesitate to reach out to suppliers for any clarifications.

We hope this guide helps clear the fog around choosing the right roof window. Every conversion is a unique project, but with a few key insights, you can make choices that boost both comfort and efficiency.
